WCCTEC CISCO Students Experience Digital Realities

Students are in a 10' x10' room with VR headsets.Virginia Tech’s Department of Computer Science, the Institute for Creativity, Arts and Technology, Advanced Research Computing, and the Center for Space Engineering and Research Institute (Space@VT) graciously hosted twenty-one WCCTEC CISCO students on 19 September. Mr. Randy Woodward’s CISCO class was exposed to a horizon of possibilities from each of the departmental presentations.

Space@VT is a premiere space research organization of international caliber whose research foci include, but not limited to: upper atmospheric science; space instrument design; magnetospheric and ionospheric physics; ground-based space weather studies; Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS receivers; computational space plasma physics; spacecraft design; advanced space propulsion systems.  CISCO students were able to see projects in various stages of development and observe satellite tracking over Virginia Tech.

The next stop, which is unique in the world, was the The Cube facility at the Institute for Creativity, Arts and Technology. This is a four-story-high, state-of-the-art theatre and high tech laboratory where CISCO students experienced immersive environments and audio and visual installations. One of the demonstrations included a virtual reality application designed for the VA-MD School of Veterinary Sciences.

From The Cube the students walked to the Advanced Research Computing’s HyperCube, also known as The Cave. This facility allowed the CISCO students to freely walk around models in an immersive virtual world.

After an information session at the Department of Computer Science, the students visited athletic facilities, including Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium.
